Te Puutahi o Pukekohekohe (Pukekohe Town Square) is undergoing an upgrade to future-proof this public space for a growing community.

This project was identified as part of the Pukekohe Masterplan that we consulted with the community on in 2022.

Pukekohe Town Square Higher Market

This project aims to create a safe and connected town centre with more flexibility for events and markets through enhancing the existing town square and creating new public space along Roulston Street.

Check out the information on what is proposed for this project below. If you would like to share your feedback you can email us at pukekohe@ekepanuku.co.nz.

The project is part of the Pukekohe Masterplan that was consulted on with the community in 2022. Through that consultation process, we heard that the heritage and character of Pukekohe is important to locals, as well as a town centre that is safe and easy to get around. This feedback has been a key consideration in the design of Te Puutahi o Pukekohekohe so far.

We have also worked with key stakeholders including Mana Whenua and the Franklin Local Board through the design process. Mana Whenua artwork will be included in the final design.

Improvements to the town square will include:

  • Making the parklets permanent, with picnic tables, seating and planting. The current parklets were part of a temporary trial and, due to their success, will become permanent.

  • A new shade structure over the playground, along with improved safety surfacing.

  • Prioritising pedestrians by creating a slow speed environment and safer crossing area between the town square, Devon Lane, and Roulston Street.

  • Removal of the Pukekohe letter screens and relocation of the water feature plant room to the southern side of the square, to open up space and improve sightlines (the water feature will remain).

  • There will also be additional seating.

Roulston Street and Devon Lane will be upgraded to provide more flexible space for events and markets, as well as safer walking and cycling connections to the town square. A slow speed environment between these roads and the square will enable this.

Two-way traffic flow and parking will be retained on Roulston Street, we will widen the footpath on the western side to accommodate market stalls, intended to provide further space during events held in the town square. This public space will feature bespoke seating and pavement designed to complement the town square, along with additional trees and planting to improve the street environment.

Devon Lane will be changed to allow for one-way traffic flow (east from Edinburgh Street) and will feature a continuous footpath on the southern side of the road for improved pedestrian safety. There will also be some new trees and planting.
