Wynyard Crossing Bridge reopens to public

Eke Panuku confirmed this morning that Te Wero Wynyard Crossing Bridge has reopened to the public. This follows the completion of an extensive maintenance programme to repair, replace and upgrade the bridge’s structural, mechanical and electrical components.

Eke Panuku General Manager Assets & Delivery Marian Webb says it has been a challenging project but will ensure the bridge can continue to safely and reliably serve Auckland’s waterfront for many years to come.

“We know this news will be well received by businesses in Wynyard Quarter as we enter the busy summer season, and we’re delighted for Aucklanders to have this direct, convenient connection back.

“We appreciate the community and local businesses’ patience and understanding during the necessary works over the past nine months to ensure the bridge’s continued functionality and long-term reliability.”

As the bridge returns to service, we’re going to closely monitor how it performs to ensure any minor teething issues can be rectified quickly. Initially the bridge will operate between 07:30-23:30, so that the vast majority of people using the bridge can do so, but that we have some time available to rectify any minor issues that come up. It will return to ‘around the clock’ service once we’re confident any issues have been ironed out.

Due to its popularity, the temporary, free Red Boats ferry service between the New Zealand Maritime Museum and the Viaduct Events Centre, will also continue into January 2025. The ferry will provide contingency as a travel option, in case there are any minor issues on the bridge that need resolving, but will also continue to give families another reason to visit the waterfront. To date, the ferry has carried over 160,000 passengers!
