The major seawall upgrade along Westhaven’s northern reclamation, close to the base of the Harbour bridge, is now complete.
The seawall upgrade, part of a wider marina enhancement programme designed to protect people, buildings and boats from rising sea levels and more frequent and severe storms - has also led to a more attractive and functional waterfront space for people to enjoy.
There are now wider pedestrian walkways with extended lookouts over the Waitematā, enhancing pedestrian connections around the entire Marina.
The redesign of the seawall involved the placement (via barge) of large rocks which will dissipate wave energy. Collaborating with mana whenua on ecological initiatives, additional planting was included to promote biodiversity within the seawall itself.
Aligned with our commitment to sustainability, basalt pavers from the old seawall have been repurposed as tree pit edges and integrated into concrete channels. The old timber boardwalk was also removed and sent to the Onehunga Community Recycling Centre and has been repurposed into a deck.
In the upcoming April planting season, new vegetation will be added to the tree pits along the seawall pathway to enhance the area.
Thanks to John Fillmore Contracting (JFC) for a successful project.
