Big changes are coming to Avondale as Auckland Council and Eke Panuku work together to bring Te Hono—a modern library, community hub, and town square—to life.

This ambitious project aims to revitalize the heart of the town centre, creating a dynamic and engaging space for the community.
Deconstruction at 1971-1987 Great North Road, Avondale is nearly complete, with most of the old structures removed. Instead of traditional demolition, Eke Panuku has opted for a more sustainable approach, prioritizing the reuse of materials. Timber salvaged from the site, including Canadian Oregon and Tawa, is set to be repurposed into custom furniture for Te Hono, ensuring a connection between the community’s past and its future.
Sustainability is a key focus throughout the deconstruction process. Glass is being repurposed, steel is being recycled, and efforts have been made to minimize dust, noise, and disruption to the surrounding area. Every step of the project is being undertaken with environmental responsibility in mind.
The development of Te Hono is a joint initiative between Auckland Council and Eke Panuku in partnership with mana whenua and Whau Local Board. While Auckland Council oversees the construction of the library and community hub, Eke Panuku is enhancing the town square and surrounding outdoor spaces. Together, they are investing in Avondale’s future, aiming to provide improved local services, vibrant public spaces, and economic growth.
As work progresses, Avondale locals can look forward to an amazing new facility that will become the heart of the town centre reflecting both the area's heritage and its vision for the future.
