A major upgrade of a mall in Old Papatoetoe is due to get underway soon with a key deal now signed which will allow the expansion of the mall’s existing supermarket.
The main-street mall is part of a 2.5 hectare block of land owned by Auckland Council on the southern side of St George Street, between Tavern Land and Wallace Road, Papatoetoe.
Panuku Development Auckland on behalf of Auckland Council is leading the renewal of the site which will see it be opened up with new plaza space and a reconfiguration of shops, making it easier and safer to get from St George Street.
The upgrade of the Papatoetoe New World supermarket is an important component of the revamp and with the 3065m2 site and buildings now sold to Foodstuffs North Island Ltd it can start implementing its expansion plans.
“Old Papatoetoe has been identified as a growth area over the next decade” says Ōtara-Papatoetoe Local Board Chair Fa'anānā Efeso Collins “It’s excellent to see Foodstuffs acknowledging that through their investment in the popular supermarket.”
Foodstuffs has lodged resource consent for the redeveloped store and expects to begin in 2017.
Foodstuffs North Island, General Manager of Property, Lindsay Rowles says that Papatoetoe is an important location for the business as there continues to be expansion and growth in the suburb with a need to be able to service more people in the area. “The new look and bigger store means that we can continue to provide our customers with the great product range, service and prices our customers expect from New World.”
Panuku Development Director Allan Young says the sale of the land to Foodstuffs North Island Ltd was essential to trigger the next phase of works.
“The sale of this land means we can get on with the car park upgrade, and the long-awaited refresh of the mall.”
“It’s an exciting time for Papatoetoe. We have secured an excellent mix of medical and health focused tenants for the refreshed mall, and coupled with an upgraded New World this will really pump new life into the area.”
Work is expected to start on the carpark reconfiguration in July 2016 and the mall upgrade in August 2016.
Panuku also plans to work in partnership with a private developer to build around 80 apartments and terrace houses on the large carpark adjacent to Tavern Lane. This project is still in the planning stages.
