On Saturday 10th July, it snowed in Auckland.
Northcote, to be exact, as locals and visitors alike came together for a Winter Family Day, with (fake) snow, games, craft making and, excitingly, a telescope for gazing into space!
Northcote is known for having heaps to offer, but at this special event, Aucklanders were able to celebrate the celestial side of winter with moon-centric Crafty Crew activities and, with the Auckland Astronomical Society in attendance, the ability to explore the heavens with a sophisticated solar telescope.
“It was great fun to celebrate winter in Northcote", enthused Roxie Haines, Placemaker at Eke Panuku Development Auckland.
“As well as the focus on outer space, we had lots of games, delicious kai, tea brewing, saxophone music and a snow machine, which led to a LOT of lovely family photos.
"Northcote’s new Zero Waste Hub was busy running eco-workshops on the day and training some new volunteers for this exciting initiative located at Pearn Place.
“We’d love to thank everyone who came and helped make it such a special day".
Eke Panuku’s work in Northcote includes working with the community on local initiatives as well as the delivery of frequent community events, such as the Easter Treasure Hunt earlier this year.
In May, Eke Panuku and its mana whenua partners were recognised for leading the regenerative design of Te Ara Awataha, Northcote’s new greenway, with the project winning the GHD Award for Environmental Leadership at the 2021 Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards.
