After 180 days of faithful service, the MV Hogwash made her final journey across Viaduct Harbour last month.

Since May 2024, this much-loved ferry has transported more than 181,000 passengers, playing a crucial role while the Wynyard Crossing Bridge underwent an extensive restoration.

The MV Hogwash quickly became a fixture on Auckland’s waterfront, ferrying families, pets, and even Santa’s elves during the festive season. Covering more than 4,149 nautical miles, the equivalent of four trips from Auckland to Sydney, this iconic vessel has been a lifeline for locals and visitors alike. The ferry’s service not only provided a practical, reliable and cost effective transport solution but also became a cherished part of Auckland’s summer experience, offering stunning views of the Waitematā Harbour along the way.

Kevin Lidgard, Head of Marinas at Eke Panuku, reflected on the ferry’s vital role: “The Hogwash has been an essential part of keeping the waterfront connected during the bridge works. The way Aucklanders embraced this service has been incredible. From families and commuters to visitors exploring the city, Hogwash brought a sense of connection and convenience during a challenging time. It’s a great example of how collaboration and innovative thinking can solve practical problems while adding something special to the community.”

Originally launched in 1946, Hogwash has had an extraordinary journey over the past 80 years, evolving from a coastal workhorse to an Auckland icon. Now part of The Red Boats fleet, the ferry has hosted everything from harbour cruises to festive charters, proving its versatility time and again.

Captain Andrew Somers, who has helmed the ferry during its time as a free service, shared his pride in its success: “It’s been an honour to see Hogwash become such an integral part of the waterfront. The support and enthusiasm from passengers have been overwhelming. It’s been a special chapter in the ferry’s journey.”

Hogwash’s final voyage marked the end of an unforgettable chapter in Auckland’s maritime history. While the ferry will return to her usual duties with The Red Boats fleet, her role in keeping the waterfront connected will be remembered as a highlight of her remarkable legacy. For Aucklanders, Hogwash has proven to be far more than just a vessel, it’s been a floating symbol of community and resilience.
