Zero-waste artist
Bridget Griffin
It’s exciting to see what can be done with other people’s rubbish!
Bridget Griffin, a young zero-waste artist, who recently exhibited at a pop-up show at NorthArt gallery in Northcote, set a challenge for herself in 2022 not to buy any new material for her art. She was inspired at Whitecliffe College, after feeling stuck in her practice and realising how toxic art material can be.
Since then, she only uses other people’s waste or found materials – old household paint, fabric, expired tattoo ink, metal, parts from air conditioning units. Anything and everything that she finds interesting, she uses to create amazing abstract art.
She scours recycling centres to find material to inspire her. Bridget says:
“I love to think creatively and take something old and at the end of its life and make something fresh and exciting from it. I’m inspired by what I find, and this influences how I make my art and the result.”
Northcote aspires to be a zero-waste community, and Bridget embraces this. By reusing material, she’s helping to do her bit to reduce what is sent to landfills and would love to encourage other artists to do the same.
Did you know that Northcote aims to be zero waste by 2040? For this to happen, everyone needs to do their bit. Find out how you can get on board here. Also, find out how we’re embracing zero-waste as part of our transformation of Northcote Town Centre – Northcote Central - click here.
