Auckland Council Group is thrilled to host the purpose-built ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix Race Stadium at Wynyard Point when the event makes its Auckland debut on 18-19 January 2025. SailGP is unlike any other sailing event, with high-speed, adrenaline-fueled racing just metres from the shoreline.
In preparation, consented work is underway crucial to ensuring a smooth setup for the event’s official viewing and fan facilities.
Following a blessing by Mana Whenua in early December, work has begun on the creation of the bespoke viewing areas. This will include the consented removal of two Pohutukawa trees, self-seeded in the sea wall in contaminated soil, by specialist arborists as part of the ongoing environmental management efforts to protect the area which, over the coming years, will be transformed as part of Te Ara Tukutuku.
Logistical preparations also include the removal of the 16-tonne ‘Big Wheel’ from the end of the point. The relic from the Scottish-built steam dredge ‘Whakarire” has been craned out and will be stored before returning at the end of January once the event concludes.
These preparations will ensure that everything is in place for a successful and safe ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix | Auckland at Wynyard Point, and ready the site to support the first stage of enabling works as the Te Ara Tukutuku project comes to life next year.
