Three initiatives we are continuing to support during FY25...
Learn more about 'Sea Cleaners', 'Sailability', and the 'Kai Ika project' below.
Sea Cleaners
Sea Cleaners, a non-profit organisation founded in 2002, has removed over 14.6 million litres of waste from our waterways, including plastic waste from the seawalls and waterways of our marina facilities. Supported by over 166,000 hours of volunteer help, our backing of Sea Cleaners contributed to Westhaven Marina receiving the New Zealand Marina Operators’ Association Best Environmental Performer award in 2022.
Sailability
Since 1991, Sailability Auckland has provided opportunities for children and adults with disabilities to learn to sail and race or simply experience controlling a sailing boat. Their mission is to offer safe sailing experiences that build mobility, self-confidence, and pride. Originating from Westhaven Marina berth holders who took people with disabilities out on their keelboats, Sailability has seen six of its members compete in the Paralympic Games and over 40 in World Championships, with two becoming world champions.
In 2009, Sailability hosted New Zealand's first world championships for sailors with disabilities, still the largest sailing regatta for people with disabilities in the country. With 21 yachts and two safety boats, they run up to seven weekly sailing programs for all levels of disabilities, led by Yachting New Zealand accredited coaches and supported by volunteers. Currently, Sailability has 65 members.
The Kai Ika Project
The Outboard Boating Club of Auckland and Papatūānuku Kōkiri Marae, in collaboration with LegaSea and the NZ Sport Fishing Council, developed The Kai Ika Project. This initiative collects and distributes fish heads, frames, and offal, which would otherwise go to waste, to appreciative families around Auckland. The offal is used as organic fertiliser in marae community gardens, focusing on regenerative gardening practices.
In 2022, Kai Ika collected 19 tonnes of heads and frames from our Z pier fishing charter base at Westhaven.
We are delighted to continue supporting these organisations during FY25.
